How to shampoo car seats and get them properly dry
Vacuum first, test a compatible cleaner, work the fabric in small sections and remove the loosened dirt and moisture. For cloth vehicle upholstery, the right product and controlled moisture matter as much as the scrubbing.

Check the seat material before choosing a cleaner
This guide covers cloth seats fitted to the vehicle. Leather, vinyl, suede-like finishes and removable child restraints need their own manufacturer-approved care.
Check your vehicle's manual before wet cleaning, especially around perforations, seat controls and airbag seams. A fabric covering alone does not establish that every cleaning method is suitable.
For a general material reference, BISSELL's upholstery guide explains the different approaches for cloth and leather.

Gather a small, suitable cleaning kit
- A vacuum with an upholstery attachment and a crevice tool.
- A cleaner approved for your seat fabric, mixed according to its label.
- Clean microfiber towels and a soft upholstery brush, where brushing is permitted.
- An upholstery extractor, if compatible with the seat and cleaning product.
Use the dilution and water temperature specified for your products and equipment. More concentrate does not automatically produce a better clean.
Five steps for shampooing cloth car seats
Vacuum the seams and seat edges
Remove crumbs, grit and loose hair from the backrest, cushion and gaps between them. Use a crevice attachment around stitched edges so dry debris is lifted before moisture is introduced.
Test the cleaner on a hidden patch
Apply a small amount to an inconspicuous area and let it dry before continuing. Stop if the color or texture changes; treat visible spots only with a product suited to the material and stain.
Clean one manageable section at a time
Apply the cleaner as directed, allowing its stated contact time. Work gently with an approved soft brush, keeping the fabric lightly damp and controlling the liquid near seams and openings.
Lift away the loosened soil and moisture
Use clean towels for the blotting method or a compatible upholstery extractor for extraction cleaning. Follow the product's residue-removal instructions; with an extractor, finish with suction-only passes as its manual directs, rather than continually adding more solution.
Let the upholstery dry before using it
Keep air moving around the cleaned seat and allow enough time for drying. Check the cushion and seams before sitting down or covering the upholstery.
Can you shampoo car seats without an extractor?
You can clean suitable fabric with a product intended for a towel-and-brush method. Apply it sparingly, blot the loosened dirt into fresh towels and follow its instructions for removing residue.
This approach suits lighter surface cleaning; it cannot pull moisture from padding like extraction equipment. Avoid repeatedly wetting a stubborn stain, and use only equipment rated for liquid pickup when removing water.

Give drying its own time
Drying time depends on the amount of moisture left behind, the seat construction, temperature, humidity and airflow. Plan for several hours, with longer drying possible in cool or humid conditions; a fixed time is not a reliable promise for every vehicle.
Remove as much moisture as your cleaning method allows, then ventilate the cabin in dry conditions and use airflow where practical. Avoid covering damp seats or closing a wet interior up for storage.
What if a water ring appears after cleaning?
A ring can remain where a small wet patch dries differently from the surrounding fabric. Follow the vehicle's instructions for cleaning the affected panel evenly with controlled moisture, then remove residue and allow it to dry.
Adding more water to the center of the same spot can leave the underlying issue unresolved. If the mark returns, reassess the material and cleaning method before repeating the treatment.

Other seat-cleaning questions
Can I use laundry detergent or dish soap?
Use a cleaning product and method permitted by your vehicle's manual and the product label. Household mixtures are not universally suitable for automotive upholstery, so avoid treating an online recipe as approval for every seat.
Will shampooing remove every stain?
No. Old discoloration, dye transfer or material damage may remain even when the fabric is cleaner; stronger scrubbing is not a reliable fix.
Does this apply to heated or ventilated seats?
Follow the cleaning guidance for your vehicle's specific seat design. Built-in features and openings make material identification and moisture control especially relevant.
How often should I shampoo my seats?
Base deeper cleaning on spills, visible soiling and the way the vehicle is used. Regular vacuuming and prompt attention to fresh messes can reduce the need for repeated wet cleaning.
